Feed Grains: Argentine corn exports hitting record pace

WINNIPEG, Mar. 21 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few
highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on
Monday, March 21.

– CBOT corn futures were up on Monday, with the May contract advancing by two and a half cents to US$3.6950 per bushel. The market was supported by investor short covering and higher prices for crude oil.

– Wheat production in Mexico is on the rise, according to numbers from the USDA. For 2016/17 production is expected to increase to 3.9 million tonnes. That is a jump of 3.7 per cent.

– Corn from Argentina is hitting the market at a record pace, largely fueled by the government’s decision to eradicate export controls. According to Argentina’s customs data January corn exports reached 1.78 million tonnes. That compares to 1.01 tonnes the year earlier. Corn exports in February were even higher hitting 2.12 million tonnes. That compares to just 778,000 tonnes the year before.

– Cheap grain from Romania, France and Ukraine appears to be cutting into Russia’s usual sales to Egypt. For the last three tenders Egypt has ignored Russian wheat in favour of the other countries, according to a report on blackseagrain.net.

– Japan is increasing the amount of rice it uses for animal feed supply, according to a USDA report. The country currently relies on imports of corn, milled rice, barley, rye, sorghum and wheat to fulfill feed demand. The use of rice in feed increased 60 percent in 2014/15 which hiked the utilization rate from 3.1 percent to five percent.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$205 to C$212 per tonne range as of March 18, which was unchanged compared to the previous week, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$228 to C$235 range, which were slightly below last week’s range.
