Feed Grains: Ukraine’s corn stockpiles down sharply

WINNIPEG, June 30 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Thursday, June 30.

– CBOT corn futures finished 10 to 14 cents per bushel lower Thursday due to projections from the USDA’s acreage and stocks report that called for an increase in corn plantings. US corn’s planted area for all purposes in 2016 is estimated at 94.1 million acres, which is up seven per cent from last year.

– The USDA report pegged wheat acreage in the US at 50.8 million acres, which is down from last year. However, it also pegged wheat stockpiles (as of June 1, 2016) at 981 million bushels which was up 30 per cent from last year’s carryout.

– Wheat export sales in the US last week came in at 645,000 tonnes, which was within the range set by most analysts.

– Japan is reportedly pondering fresh orders for US corn due to the decline in corn prices and the rise of the Japanese yen.

– Grain stockpiles in Ukraine are estimated to be roughly 8 million tonnes, which is 20 percent less than at the same time last year. Most of the shortfall was attributed to a record volume of exports to other countries. Corn supplies are seeing especially strong demand with the country’s’ stockpile down by 36 percent this year compared to last year.

– The winter wheat harvest has started in Nebraska with most of the early cutting happening in the southern portion of the state, according to a report by wnax.com.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$205-$208 per tonne range as of June 24, which was slightly stronger from the week before, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$230 to C$235 range as the price range narrowed from the previous week.
