WINNIPEG, Sept. 14 (CNS Canada) – A Statistics Canada update on crop production released today, pegs oat production for 2017 at 19 per cent above 2016 levels.
The report estimated wheat production in Canada has declined 14.5 per cent in 2017 from 2016 and barley production has fallen 16.8 per cent compared to last year.
StatsCan blamed the yield losses to dry conditions in the southern growing areas with barley yields falling to 64 bushels per acre this year from 74.4 bu./acre a year ago.
Corn harvest is creeping forward across the United States with most quality expected to be good. However, in some areas where excessive dryness settled in through summer such as southern Iowa, yields could be 40 to 60 bushels per acre less than a year ago. With harvest still in early stages, crops across Nebraska, Iowa and Illinois are being reported as highly variable. However, most analysts still expect U.S. producers to combine a large corn harvest overall.
