Feed Grains: Questions surround winter wheat seeding

WINNIPEG, Sept. 28 (CNS Canada) – Alberta wheat and barley organizations have announced they plan to share a general manager. Alberta Wheat Commission manager Tom Steve will step into the role at Alberta Barley. The two commissions also plan to assess the feasibility of amalgamating management staff for a four-month trial period. The two have been sharing office space since 2003.

Cargill has announced that it has completed the acquisition of the animal feed company Southern States Cooperative Inc. Cargill bought the assets of Southern States, which include its seven feed mills and feed products, but retail, farm supply, energy and agronomy were not included in the deal. The acquisition is seen as improving Cargill’s distribution capabilities in the southeast and the eastern seaboard areas of the United States. The International Grains Council has increased its forecast for world grain production in 2017-18 to make it the second-largest ever.

IGC’s report estimated total grain production at 2.069 billion tonnes, a 19 million tonne increase from previous forecasts and 64 million tonnes less than the record 2.133 billion tonnes produced last year. Corn production was put at 1.029 billion tonnes, up 12 million tonnes. The IGC cited brighter production outlooks for the United States and Argentina as reasons for the revised numbers. Wheat production was raised by six million tonnes to 748 million, based on higher forecasts for Canada, Russia, India and Europe.
Corn futures in Chicago fell today with weather and harvest the main factors. A five-day forecast for good harvesting weather pressured the market. December contracts at the Chicago Board of trade settled the day at US$3.52.5 per bushel, down 1.5 cents U.S. March settled down 1.5 cents as well, at US$3.65.25 per bu., and May fell 2.0 cents U.S. to US$3.73.75 per bu.
