Prairie wheat growers who’ve delivered into the Canadian Wheat Board’s 2009-10 pool can expect an adjustment payment in the next few weeks.

The federal government on Friday approved increases of between $5 and $44.65 per tonne, depending on wheat grade, class and protein level, effective June 3 (Thursday).

For example, the initial payment as of Aug. 1, 2009 on No. 1 Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) and No. 1 CW Hard White Spring (CWHWS), both at 15.5 per cent protein, was $211.60 per tonne. The approved adjustment payment is $44.65 per tonne, for a total initial payment of $256.25 per tonne ($6.97 per bushel).

Alberta Crop Report: Rains in the south, dryness in the north

Rain fell onto the southern half of Alberta last week, while hot and dry conditions persisted in the northern half, according to the province’s crop report released on July 18.

The adjustment payment on No. 1 CWRS drops to $5 per tonne on 11 per cent protein, for a total initial payment of $171 per tonne ($4.65/bu.)

On No. 3 CWRS (14.5) the adjustment brings the initial payment from $176 to $208.10 per tonne ($5.66/bu.). On No. 1 CW Red Winter (CWRW, 11.5), the adjusted initial payment is $153.70 per tonne ($4.18/bu.), up from $143 per tonne last August.

For feed and general purpose classes, the adjustment is $5 per tonne, bringing No. 1 and No. 2 CW General Purpose and CW Feed to $107 per tonne ($2.91/bu.).

Farmers who delivered grain for sale through the CWB wheat pool between Aug. 1, 2009 and June 2 this year will get adjustment payments, the CWB said in a release Friday.

Direct-deposit payments will go into eligible farmers’ bank accounts on June 15 while those who get paid by cheque can expect to see cheques in the mail anytime after June 24.

Farmers thinking about taking a deferral on the adjustment payment must call and inform the CWB toll-free at 800-275-4292 before Wednesday, June 9.

The federal government, which guarantees the CWB’s initial payments to farmers, must approve the level at which they’re set or adjusted.

The government on May 14 introduced a bill proposing to shorten that payment approval process by as much as three weeks, by eliminating the need for approval from the federal Treasury Board.
