Canadian Financial Close: Rise in oil prices boost loonie

WINNIPEG, Feb. 15 (CNS Canada) – The Canadian dollar was up at market close on Friday as crude oil prices were on the rise.

The dollar finished Friday at US$0.7538 or US$1=C$1.3266, which compares with Thursday’s close of US$0.7520 or C$1.3298.

The S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 142.26 points to finish Friday at 15,838.24 points. Gains on the TSX were on the heels of those on United States stock markets.

The Dow Jones leapt 444.18 points on Friday to close at 25,883.57. The S&P 500 increased 29.86 points to close at 2,775.59 and the NASDAQ rose 45.46 points to end the week at 7,472.41 points.

Optimism stemming from continuing trade talks between the U.S. and China fueled Friday’s gains. Although high-level negotiations in Beijing made little progress, talks are set to resume next week in Washington, D.C.

Benchmark oil prices were up on Friday in light of further production cuts by Saudi Arabia. West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up US$1.32 to close at US$55.73 per barrel. Brent crude oil rose US$1.04 cents to close at US$64.65 per barrel.

Gold was up as well, by US$10.70 on Friday to US$1,324.60 per ounce.

Rocky Mountain Dealerships Inc.–up $ 0.06 at $ 8.90
