Canadian dollar and business outlook

WINNIPEG, Dec. 31 (MarketsFarm) – The Canadian dollar was slightly weaker on Thursday morning, amid light market activity.

     At 8:45 CST Thursday morning the Canadian dollar was at US$0.7863 or US$1=C$1.2717, which compares with Wednesday’s North American close of US$0.7831 or US$1=C$1.2796.

Global stock indices were flat on the morning of the last trading session of 2020. Reports that United States unemployment claims were lower than anticipated provided some optimism to markets. Unemployment claims totalled 787,000 during the week ended Dec. 26. At 8:50 CST the TSX was down by 78.53 points to trade at 17,449.39.

Crude oil prices were slightly stronger this morning. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was up 27 cents at US$48.27 per barrel. Brent Crude increased 25 cents at US$51.34.
