Canadian Dollar and Business Outlook: Crude oil rises despite possible Saudi output increase

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar continues to slowly rise on Thursday.

As of 8:45 a.m. CDT, the loonie was at US$0.7919 or US$1=C$1.2628, compared to US$0.7912 or US$1=C$1.2639 on Wednesday. The United States Dollar Index dropped 0.38 of a point to 102.12.

Crude oil prices were higher on Thursday, despite pressure from speculation Saudi Arabia is willing to increase oil output. Brent crude oil gained US$0.73 per barrel to US$117.02. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) added US$0.59 at US$115.85/barrel. Meanwhile, Western Canadian Select (WCS) pulled back US$0.72 to US$97.02/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index jumped 105.68 points to 20,819.40.

Gold spiked US$19.60 per ounce to US$1,868.30.
