Canadian Dollar and Business Outlook: Loonie below 80-cent U.S. mark

WINNIPEG – The Canadian dollar has slipped below the 80-cent United States mark on Friday morning.

As of 8:59 a.m. CST, the loonie was at US$0.7946 or US$1=C$1.2585, compared to Wednesday’s close of US$0.8031 or US$1=C$1.2452. The Bank of Canada did not have a closing rate for the Canadian dollar on Thursday due to Remembrance Day.

The U.S. Dollar Index was up 0.02 of a point to 95.20.

Benchmark crude oil prices were also easing off on Friday. Brent crude oil retreated US$0.73 per barrel to US$82.14. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) dropped US$0.85 to US$80.74/barrel. Western Canadian Select (WCS) slipped US$0.19 to US$60.52/barrel.

The TSX/S&P Composite Index rose 107.52 points at 21,689.50.

Gold lost US$3.90 per ounce to US$1,860.00.
