Canadian Financial Close: Loonie up on February job gains

WINNIPEG, March 8 (MarketsFarm) – The Canadian dollar was up at market close on Friday, on a report of good job growth during February.

The dollar finished Friday at US$0.7450 or US$1=C$1.3422, which compares with Thursday’s close of US$0.7442 or C$1.3438.

Statistics Canada reported 55,900 jobs were created in February, which resulted in unemployment remaining at 5.8 per cent.

The Toronto Stock Exchange was down because of Canada’s poor economic growth and a drop in oil prices. The TSX declined 60.30 points to finish Friday at 15.996.21 points.

In the Unites States, the stock markets incurred losses on Friday due to poor job data in that country and a weakening global economy. The Dow Jones was down 22.99 points to end trading at 25,450.24 points. The NASDAQ lost 13.32 points to close at 7,408.14. The S&P 500 slipped 5.86 points to end the week at 2,743.07 points.

Benchmark oil prices were down Friday with reports of U.S. stocks increasing. Brent crude oil lost 54 cents to close at US$65.76 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate crude oil fell 63 cents to close at US$56.03 per barrel.

Gold was up US$14.40 on Friday to US$1,300.50 per ounce.
