Work is underway at Cargill’s grain elevator at Kindersley in western Saskatchewan to boost its rail loop capacity to 100 cars.
"By improving Kindersley’s rail infrastructure, we are addressing the challenges we’ve been seeing regarding restrictions on deliveries due to limited capacity," Len Penner, president of Cargill’s Canadian arm in Winnipeg, said in a release Wednesday.
The project began earlier this month and is expected to be complete in the spring, the company said. The facility will remain open during construction.
Cargill bought the Kindersley elevator and eight others from Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in 2007 in a side deal from SaskPool’s merger with Agricore United into Viterra.

Cargill said it has since doubled the volume of grain handled at the elevator, which has capacity for 22,500 tonnes of grain and is served by Canadian National Railway (CN).
According to CN, the elevator’s current rail car spot can handle over 50 cars, with a gross weight on rail (GWR) limit of 286,000 pounds per car.
"We have been wanting to provide more opportunities for growers in the western Saskatchewan area to move their grain," Blaine Duncan, regional manager for Cargill AgHorizons’ North Saskatchewan region, said in the same release.
"Having increased rail car access will grant our customers a competitive advantage with additional access to the western markets."
