The Canadian Wheat Board plans to roll out a round of interim payments Oct. 21 to farmers for milling wheat, durum and malting barley delivered for the 2008-09 crop year.

The CWB on Friday announced interim payments for wheat ranging from $2.25 per tonne for all grades of Canada Western Extra Strong to $29.95 per tonne for No. 1 Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) at 15.5 per cent protein.

Wheats including Canada Prairie Spring Red and White (CPSR, CPSW), Canada Western Soft White Spring (CWSWS), CW General Purpose and various feed grades will receive no interim payment.

Fund traders flip to net short in canola futures

Speculative fund traders have moved to a net short position in canola futures for the first time in five months, according to the latest Commitments of Traders report from the United States Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC).

Interim payments for durum will range from $13 per tonne for No. 2 Canada Western Amber Durum (CWAD) at 15.5 per cent protein, to $17 per tonne for regular No. 2 CWAD. No. 5 CWAD gets no interim payment.

All grades and classes of malting (a.k.a. designated) barley will see interim payments of $7 per tonne, the CWB said Friday. Feed-grade barleys get no interim payment.

An interim payment represents a partial settlement of what’s due to farmers from the sale of their grain. Issued after July 31 in the crop year, the interim is an earlier payment of proceeds that would otherwise be included in the final payment.

Payment will be issued to producers by direct deposit on Oct. 21, the CWB said. Farmers who instead get payments by cheque can expect to start seeing interim payment cheques in the mail by Oct. 29.

Any farmer who would rather defer this payment has until Oct. 16 to notify the CWB online or by calling 1-800-275-4292 with his or her PIN and ID number, the CWB said.
