A Winnipeg further processor making turkey goods for the foodservice, health care and institutional markets is on its way to Granny’s.

Granny’s Poultry Co-operative, also of Winnipeg, announced Monday it would buy Prairie Produce Inc. for an undisclosed sum.

“This acquisition shows our continued commitment to our producers, the poultry industry, and is a logical expansion to our business,” Granny’s CEO Craig Evans said in a release.

Operating since 1948, Prairie Produce, a federally inspected processing facility in the city’s core area, makes raw boneless turkey roasts and cooked turkey rolls and breast meat in specialty and low-sodium varieties.

As the harvest in southern Alberta presses on, a broker said that is one of the factors pulling feed prices lower in the region. Darcy Haley, vice-president of Ag Value Brokers in Lethbridge, added that lower cattle numbers in feedlots, plentiful amounts of grass for cattle to graze and a lacklustre export market also weighed on feed prices.

According to Granny’s, Prairie Produce will continue to operate its business as usual and all employees will remain with the company under Granny’s management.

A portion of production from Granny’s turkey producer members will go to the Prairie Produce plant on Logan Avenue for use in its products.

Granny’s remains Manitoba’s largest poultry processing operation, with a primary processing plant at Blumenort, north of Steinbach, and a hatchery and head office in the Transcona area of Winnipeg.

The company in recent months has diversified its offerings to include omega-3 poultry items infused with flax, while others are billed as reduced-sodium.

“We are always looking for opportunities and further processing provides strength and durability to grow the business and primary poultry,” Granny’s chairman Randy Schroeder said in the company’s release.
