A Manitoba grower-owned seed company has picked up an exclusive distribution deal to handle Maizex Seeds’ seed corn for both Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

NorthStar Genetics Manitoba currently supplies Roundup Ready soybeans to growers in Manitoba through a network of 30 dealers, plus one each in Saskatchewan and Ontario.

“Our strong product offering and NorthStar’s grassroots understanding of the market will insure the high level of success that we have enjoyed in other regions of Canada,” Maizex founder/president Dave Baute said in a release.

Maizex, based at Tilbury, Ont., about 50 km east of Windsor, has a dealer network across seven provinces, which until now has included two in Manitoba’s south-central bean-growing region and one in eastern Saskatchewan.

U.S. grains: Corn rebounds from contract lows on short covering, bargain buying

Bargain buying and short covering lifted U.S. corn futures on Monday after the market slid to contract lows on expectations for strong U.S. output, traders said.

The family-owned firm bills itself as the largest Canadian-owned hybrid seed corn company.

“This alignment with Maizex is a good move — not only for our respective companies, but also for our farmer customers,” NorthStar Manitoba’s general manager Ray Wytinck said in the same release.

“The early maturity and high yields provided by Maizex corn hybrids give farmers in Manitoba another profitable crop option that is complementary to growing soybeans.”

Grower members of NorthStar Genetics Manitoba, which has operated since 2004, share ownership with NorthStar Genetics, based at Wanamingo, Minn., south of St. Paul.

The parent firm, founded in 1996 by members of the Minnesota Crop Improvement Association, markets seed corn and soybeans in Minnesota and the Dakotas on top of its business in Manitoba.
