The federal government will put $565,900 toward development of a national sector organization, the Organic Federation of Canada, to bring together all players in Canada’s organic industry, raise awareness of the sector and help with regulatory development.

OFC president Stephanie Wells said in a government release that the funding, announced Monday, will go toward the group’s recent hiring of a national co-ordinator “to ensure strong communication and effective action.”

Another $711,500 in federal money was earmarked in the same announcement Monday for the Organic Agriculture Centre of Canada, based in Truro, N.S., to “better identify research needs and to more effectively communicate research results back to the sector.”

OACC manager Andrew Hammermeister said the funds “will help us facilitate research and education for producers and consumers across Canada.”
