Six Prince Edward Island cattlemen have been named by acclamation to sit on the province’s new cattle commodity board.

The Prince Edward Island Cattle Producers Board, created as a commodity board in January this year, was initially led by the directors of the P.E.I. Cattlemen’s Association on the date that the regulation for the new board came into force.

The six newly acclaimed board members, announced Tuesday, will assume office when the new board holds its first meeting in March 2008.

Peter Walker of Travellers Rest, Jamie Whalen of Vernon Bridge and Peter Verleun of Montague were named to represent cattle producers in Prince, Queens and Kings counties respectively.

Cameron MacDonald of O’Leary, Ivan Johnson of Miscouche and Brian Morrision of Summerside were acclaimed to represent cattle producers at large. The new Cattle Marketing Board regulations state that the three founding at-large members’ terms must be staggered from one to three years. The new board will pass a resolution setting the lengths of those three members’ terms when it meets in March.
