Saskatchewan harvest ahead of normal

Saskatchewan farmers have harvested 60 per cent of the overall 2011 crop as of Sept. 12, moving ahead of the five-year average after a week of favorable weather, the provincial government said on Thursday in a weekly report.

* Harvest progress most advanced for this time of year in four years.
* Five-year average for this time is 47 per cent combined.
* 27 per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut.
* Harvest progress by region varies, with 71 per cent combined in the southwest and southeast; 57 per cent done in the west-central; 56 per cent combined in east-central; 47 per cent harvested in northeast; and only 39 per cent done in the northwest.
* 92 per cent of the lentils have been combined, along with 94 per cent of the field peas; 56 per cent of the durum; 53 per cent of the spring wheat and canola; and 6 per cent of flax.
* Freezing temperatures on Sept. 13 affected late-seeded crops.
* High winds recently rolled swaths in some areas.
* Crop yields generally average to above average except areas in the south and southeast that had excessive spring moisture.
* Quality good on crop that has been combined.
* Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as 2 per cent surplus, 69 per cent adequate, 26 per cent short and 3 per cent very short.
* Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 63 per cent adequate, 33 per cent short and two per cent very short.

Saskatchewan farmers advanced their harvest 11 points during the week ended Sept. 1, bringing it to 23 per cent complete. However, that’s still 17 points behind the five-year average despite dry conditions throughout most of the province.
