A U.S. company has acquired a Calgary-based, cattle industry-facing annual and perennial forage company.
South Dakota-based Millborn Seeds announced today it had purchased Union Forage. In a news release, Millborn described Union Forage as a “forage seed innovator” that aligns with its “mission of enriching land and lives by delivering more than 1,200 species of seed solutions to farmers, ranchers and landowners across North America.”
Union Forage will continue to offer its existing lineup, including silage corn, in Canada. It will continue to operate under the Union Forage name throughout 2024. The acquisition allows Union Forage to integrate Millborn’s Renovo Seed market brand into its existing lineup.

Manitoba Crop Report: Rains not enough to curb dryness
Many areas of Manitoba received varied amounts of rainfall during the week ended July 6, 2025. However, it was not enough to replenish moisture in some areas.
Renovo Seed was unclear when asked if Union Forage would continue under that name beyond 2024.
“The ultimate goal is to create an integrated seed supply chain and improve seed quality and accessibility for customers throughout North America, so the Millborn and Union Forage teams will focus on that in 2024 and beyond,” wrote Laura Vsetecka, content marketing manager for Renovo Seed, in an email.
“Union Forage focuses on selling perennial and annual forages through a network of top-tier dealers,” said Geoff Barker, Union Forage general manager. “We are ready to make a bigger impact on the land and the people who serve it, and we know Millborn is the right fit to grow this market.”
Established in 2014, Union Forage has built a dealer-focused seed business it described as complementary to Millborn.
Millborn Seeds has been in the specialty seed industry for 35 years. It currently serves customers in all 50 U.S. states and abroad.
According to Millborn, the purchase introduces Canadian customers to a broader portfolio of seed solutions. “Union Forage’s established dealer network and product offering is top-tier and allows us to reach even more producers in Canada,” said Matt Fenske, Millborn CEO.
Union Forage was developed from a need to evolve grazing plans for the farming and ranching community in western Canada, said Graeme Finn, Union Forage founder, president and senior forage specialist.
“Since then, we’ve led the way in Canada by using different forage blends to achieve this for all cattlemen, as well as improving soil health, lowering grazing costs, and decreasing fertilizer inputs. We are looking forward to continuing to support producers throughout Canada with the Millborn team.”
