Canada’s largest grain company has added herbicide to its list of branded offerings for Prairie farmers.
Viterra on Wednesday announced it would launch a Group 1 fenoxaprop herbicide, WildCat, exclusively through its outlets as a grassy weed control option for spring wheat, durum and barley growers.
The product, which is registered for use only in the three Prairie provinces and British Columbia’s Peace region, has “numerous” tank mix options for multiple weed control in one pass, the company said.
WildCat has a “variable rate” that can be used for lighter infestations of wild oats or just to control green foxtail. As well, the Regina-based grain firm said, WildCat offers “exceptional” control of barnyardgrass.

The product will be sold by the 12.4-litre container, providing enough chemical to treat 16.2 to 32.4 hectares depending on the target grassy weed to be controlled.
WildCat, which was originally registered by ag chem firm Bayer CropScience, “is a solid performer and one of several new products we will be launching for 2009 backed by the strength of the Viterra brand,” said Doug Wonnacott, Viterra’s senior vice-president of agri-products, in a company release Wednesday.
“Through long-standing relationships with pesticide manufacturers, Viterra has negotiated exclusive offers that allow us to differentiate and diversify our crop protection portfolio and play a unique role in providing crop protection solutions to our customers,” the company said on the “crop protection” page on its website.
