A significant frost landed on some of southern Ontario’s soybean crops over the weekend, according to the University of Guelph’s AgriLink service.

Frost was reported on both Saturday and Sunday mornings from Palmerston, about 65 km northwest of Guelph, east through Orangeville and into the Durham region around Uxbridge, about 40 km northwest of Oshawa, AgriLink said Monday.

One report submitted to AgriLink said the temperature hovered around -2°C for over three hours, “considered significant enough to nip most soybean fields.”

Still-green soybean plants will by now show frost damage, AgriLink said. The plants’ seed pods will shrivel and yields are expected to diminish as a result.

Corn crops in those areas are expected to fare better, being more tolerant of frost.

Frost was also reported around Oxford County, but the temperature didn’t stay below freezing long enough to cause damage, AgriLink reported.
