Meetings, workshops and information-sharing projects for young farmers are on the Canadian Young Farmers’ Forum to-do list with a multi-year federal funding commitment.
Jean-Pierre Blackburn, the federal minister of state for agriculture, announced a pledge of $1.2 million over four years for the organization.
“With this investment, our government is not only helping young farmers, we are also investing in the future of agriculture,” Blackburn said in Niagara Falls on Sunday, according to a government release.

- meetings where young farmers from across Canada have the opportunity to exchange ideas on solutions to the problems encountered by young people trying to set themselves up in farming;
- workshops on farm business management practices;
- support for provincial young farmers’ organizations; and
- increased information for young farmers via the CYFF newsletter and website.
Also, according to Newfoundland farmer Ian Richardson, the CYFF’s president, the funds will “assist in leveraging partnerships for growth and stability for the future” of the organization.
Blackburn also said Sunday that he’s about to implement an “action plan” which aims to answer issues that were brought up during his meetings with young farmers, academics and ag industry representatives, and to “help young farmers steadily shape the future of Canadian agriculture.”
The funding for CYFF will flow through the Business Development program of the federal/provincial Growing Forward farm policy funding framework.
