Feed Grains: Argentina begins grain sales under re-valued Peso

Winnipeg – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian
and world feed grains markets on Friday, December 18.

– CBOT corn futures settled slightly higher on Friday, as nearby gains in oilseeds and year-end positioning, gave strength to the market.

– Informa Economics lowered its forecast for 2016 corn plantings. The group predicts 88.9 million acres will be planted in the US next year. That is down from last month’s forecast of 90.1 million acres.

– A group of DDGS producers in China is petitioning the government to seek anti-dumping duties from the US. In recent months buyers of DDGs in China have been turning to imports in response to higher-priced domestic supplies, according to reports coming out of the country.

– Monsanto has agreed to settle lawsuits filed against it after genetically-modified wheat appeared in an Oregon field back in 2013. The unapproved plants prompted Japan and South Korea to temporarily suspend purchases of US wheat. Monsanto has agreed to pay US$350,000 to settle seven of the eight suits brought against it by farmers in 5 different states, according to information on its website.

– Argentina has already held its first grain sale since the country decided to slash its export tax and revalue its currency.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of
Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$215 to C$220 per tonne
area as of December 11, according to provincial reports. Feed
wheat prices are in the C$222 to C$230 range. The bids for both commodities had softened slightly from the previous week.
