Feed Grains: Barley harvest making progress

WINNIPEG, Aug. 17 (CNS Canada) – Barley in Saskatchewan is about two per cent combined, most of that in southern areas. In the southwest, four per cent has been combined and four per cent is ready to be straight cut. In the southeast, seven per cent has been combined, seven per cent is ready for straight-cutting and 10 per cent is in swaths.
As well, three per cent of barley in the southeast of the province is going for greenfeed or silage, as is two per cent in the southwest, according to the latest Saskatchewan Agriculture’s latest crop report released Aug. 17.

The south of the province is leading the way in oats too, with seven per cent in swaths in the southeast and eight per cent in swaths in the southwest reported. Province-wide, one per cent of oats have been harvested.

Corn futures at the Chicago Board of Trade continued their steady decline, pushed lower by plentiful supplies and favourable crop conditions. Corn settled down 2 cents U.S. for the September contract at US$3.50.50 per bushel, December was down 2.25 cents U.S. at US$3.64.25 per bu. and the March contract was down 2 cents U.S. at US$3.76.25 per bu.

The North Dakota Stockmen’s Association, along with several corn organizations, has started a drought-relief foundation to assist farmers devastated by drought. The Heartland Drought Relief Fund is accepting donations with applications to receive funds from the donations accepted until the end of the year.
The North Dakota Corn Growers Association and the Corn Utilization Council request that farmers who are able to provide free or low-cost corn or corn stalk bales to ranchers in need. Nearly three-quarters of pastures and the alfalfa hay crop are rated as poor to very poor.

Bulgaria’s wheat crop has come in at 5.7 million tonnes with 99 per cent of seeded area harvested. That’s more than seven per cent above last year’s crop. The country seeded 2.7 million acres into wheat.
Meanwhile, Bulgaria’s barley harvest is almost 14 per cent lower than a year ago with 99 per cent of the crop harvested. The country harvested 619,113 tonnes of barley from 321,700 acres.
