Feed Grains: Gene could reveal new insights into corn disease resistance

July 25 (CNS Canada) – Researchers at North Carolina State University believe they have found a gene in corn that could be related to the plant’s ability to resist two or three different diseases. In the journal Nature, researchers pointed to a gene in corn that apparently bestows partial resistance to southern leaf blight, gray leaf spot and possibly Northern leaf blight.

Feed wheat and feed barley prices are sliding lower with prices for feed barley around Lethbridge at C$200 per tonne, compared to C$210 per tonne about a week ago. Feed wheat was also around C$200 per tonne, with cooler weather and feedlots not active buyers.

The Scoular Company has acquired a grain handling facility next to its ingredient and blending plant in Jerome, Idaho. Scoular now controls the grinding and storage facilities, 45 acres of land and a rail line servicing the site. The operation is designed to serve dairy and beef cattle feed markets in Idaho.

Corn futures were off 8.5 cents U.S. today, on forecasts for better weather. Chicago Board of Trade corn closed at US$3.68.75 for September contracts, US$3.82.25, down 8.5 cents U.S. for December and also down 8.5 cents U.S. for the March 2018 contract at US$3.93.5

Current prices now posted at Western Commodities Inc. show offers to buy high vomitoxin barley at C$2.75-C$3 per bushel, FOB in most areas of Saskatchewan.

Feed Oats were being bid for C$1.75-$2 per bu., depending on quality and location, for most areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Spring-thrashed oats in most areas of Saskatchewan and Manitoba were attracting offers of C$1.50 per bu. for prompt movement.
On the selling side, feed barley at Innisfail, Alta., was posted for C$3.85 per bu. and C$4 per bu. at Olds.
