Feed Grains: Mississippi barge traffic drops

WINNIPEG, September 16 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Friday, September 16.

– CBOT corn futures finished seven cents per bushel higher on Friday, as forecasts are calling for showers to fall over the US Midwest during the next week. There are also reports of diplodia fungus and ear-rot emerging from Indiana and other states.

– Corn yields in Manitoba are expected to be slightly lower this year, due to persistent rainfall. The president of the Manitoba Corn Growers Association said yields could be in the 115 to 120 bushel range, although it was too early to know for certain. For the past few years, fodder corn acreage in Manitoba has hovered between 85,000 to 90,000 acres.

– More concerns are popping up in regards to where US farmers will store the upcoming grain harvest. A professor from Purdue University told the Brownfield Ag News that every facility in Indiana will need to operate at peak capacity to handle the load. In 2014, elevators were actually operating at 107 percent of capacity, he said.

– The number of barges travelling on the Mississippi River to New Orleans decreased sharply last week. According to the USDA, just 344 barges loaded with grain moved down the river during the week ended September 10. That was 38 percent less than the week before.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$162-$170 per tonne range as of September 9, which was C$4 lower than the week before, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$184.50 to C$195.00 range which was down roughly C$10 from the previous week.
