Feed Grains: Peas and barley hailed as cost-effective feed in UK

WINNIPEG, Mar. 23 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Wednesday, March 23.

– CBOT corn futures were up half a cent on Wednesday, with the May contract at US$3.7000 per bushel. The market was relatively quiet as investors hunted for bargains amid light selling.

– Some wheat fields in northwestern Ohio have already started to turn green, according to a report in The Courier.

– Growing barley and peas are being held up as the most effective way of cutting the costs of forage production in the United Kingdom, according to a report in fginsight.com. According to seed specialist Francis Dunne, barley was preferable right now due to its energy density and quality of its straw, while peas, specifically maple peas, would make an ideal partner due to its natural pest resistance.

– February wheat shipments from Paraguay to Brazil totalled 78,668 tonnes. That is six times more than what the US sent to Brazil in the same time frame, according to a report in cenariomt.com.

– Winter barley production in Ireland is slightly lower than last year. According to numbers from the country’s Central Statistics Office, production was 1.02 million tonnes, which was 145,000 tonnes less than in 2015.

– Ethiopia is looking for half a million tonnes of wheat as the country is mired in a serious drought, according to reports out of the country.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$205 to C$212 per tonne range as of March 18, which was unchanged compared to the previous week, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$228 to C$235 range, which were slightly below last week’s range.
