Feed Grains: South African drought spurring corn imports

Winnipeg – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Thursday, January 7.

– CBOT corn futures settled within half a cent of unchanged on Thursday, as the market continued to consolidate ahead of next week’s USDA supply/demand and stocks reports. The most active March contract was up a quarter cent at US$3.5300 per bushel.

– Cargill Inc. saw revenues fall by 10% during the past quarter, according to results released today, with declining beef and grain markets behind some of the downturn in profits. However, its animal feed business did show some relative strength.

– Monsanto announced that it will cut another 1,000 jobs, after first announcing cuts in October, bringing the total job reductions to 3,600. The job cuts account for about 16% of the company’s workforce, and are said to be being made in an effort to streamline in the face of declining bio-tech corn seed sales.

– South Africa will need to import up to 5 million tonnes of corn this year, due to drought conditions in the country, according to officials with Grains SA. In 2014/15 the country imported only 65,000 tonnes of yellow maize, but has already imported over ten times that amount during the first eight months of the current crop year. However, there have been some reports that the country’s ports won’t be able to handle such large imports.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$215 to C$217 per tonne area as of December 18, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$226 to C$230 range. Updated prices from the government are set to be released on January 8.
