Feed Grains: Texas considering planting feed barley
By Commodity News Service Canada
Winnipeg, Dec. 22 (CNS) – Following are a few highlights in
the Canadian and world feed grains markets for Friday, Dec. 22.
Feed wheat prices in the European Union continue to be
higher than milling wheat. According to a report in the Business
Recorder, feed wheat prices in Germany’s South Oldenburg market
were at 173 euros per tonne Thursday, while feed wheat was at
173.5 euros per tonne.
Barley may soon start to be planted in Texas for livestock
feed, according to a report in AgriLife Today. A researcher with
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service has said barley is a
suitable forage crop for grazing and silage, offering advantages
over other cool-season forages grown in Texas. Preliminary
studies have found it offers greater resistance than wheat to a
major Texas pest, the Hessian fly. Studies on feed barley are
expected to wrap up in 2018.
