Feed Grains: UN Food Price Index declines

WINNIPEG, Feb. 5 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Friday, February 5.

– CBOT corn futures were weaker on Friday, with the March contract down 2.75 cents at US$3.6575 per bushel.

– The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s Food Price Index declined by 1.9 per cent in January, compared to the previous month and was down 16 per cent from the same point the previous year – at 150.4 points. The Index tracks five key commodity groups including cereals, vegetable oils, dairy, meat, and sugar. Included in the data was an upward revision to the agency’s world cereal ending stocks estimate for 2015/16 to 642 million tonnes.

– Zimbabwe has declared a state of disaster as drought conditions in the country have decimated crops. Many other African nations are also dealing with drought issues, due in part to El Nino weather patterns.

– Ukraine grew 8.3 million tonnes of barley in 2015, which was down by 8.5 per cent from the previous year, according to data from the country’s statistics agency. Corn production was also down by 8.5 per cent, coming in at 23.2 million tonnes. Wheat production, meanwhile, was up by 9.9 per cent, at 26.5 million tonnes.

– Brazil’s Conab is now forecasting this year’s corn crop in the country at 83.3 million tonnes, which would be up slightly from an earlier estimate but about 1.3 million tonnes below the level hit the previous year.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$209 to C$215 per tonne area as of January 29, which was unchanged compared to the previous week, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$222 to C$230 range, which were down slightly from the previous week.
