Feed Grains: US Barley Harvest Increases

WINNIPEG, Mar. 24 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on Thursday, March 24.

– CBOT corn futures finished a cent and a half higher on Thursday, with the May contract at US$3.7000 per bushel. Investors were covering shorts ahead of the long weekend which provided futures with some support.

– US farmers harvested 3.1 million acres of barley in 2015, according to the executive director of the North Dakota Barley Council. In an interview with The Prairie Star, Steve Edwardson says that was approximately 25 percent more than the 2.4 million acres harvested the year before. He adds a large increase in the amount of carryover stocks has helped push prices down, according to the report.

– According to the USDA, the drought in Ethiopia is so bad grain production is estimated to have dropped by 4.5 million tonnes. As a result the country is raising its wheat imports to 2.5 million tonnes, which is double what they brought in last year.

– Egyptian Arab Contractors says it is in the final stages of completing construction on 11 new granaries in the country. The country wants to build 25 granaries with a total capacity of 1.5 million tonnes.

– Zimbabwe is looking for nearly 470,000 tonnes of corn to help boost its stocks as the large drought that affected most of Southern Africa shows no signs of letting up.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$205 to C$212 per tonne range as of March 18, which was unchanged compared to the previous week, according to provincial reports. Feed wheat prices were in the C$228 to C$235 range, which were slightly below last week’s range.
