Feed Grains: US corn crop to see more cold weather

WINNIPEG, Feb. 9 (CNS Canada) – Following are a few
highlights in the Canadian and world feed grains markets on
Tuesday, February 9.

– CBOT corn futures were a cent weaker on Tuesday, with the March contract at US$3.6100 per bushel. The corn market was weighed down by a USDA report which predicted US corn ending stocks would be larger than previously forecast.

– The USDA’s Canadian bureau predicts Canada’s wheat area in 2016 will fall to its lowest level in five years. The agency pegged harvested wheat area at 22.9 million acres, a decrease of 840,000 acres from last year.

– The US corn belt will likely receive some cold weather in the next week, according to multiple weather reports. The chill is expected to set in east of the Mississippi River.

– According to research by Canadian researcher Navin Ramankutty, 3 billion tonnes of the world’s cereal crops were lost to heat and drought between 1964 to 2007.

– Russian grain exports could rise 3% in 2015-16, said Russia’s Agriculture Minister. In an interview on Russian TV, Alexander Tkachyov said exports could hit 22 million tonnes. Back in January there were rumours Russia planned to impose an export tax on some grain supplies but those ideas seem to have been scrapped.

– Over the last four months wheat exports from Kazakhstan decreased by 5%, according to blackseagrain.net.

– Feed barley bids in the key cattle feeding area of Lethbridge, Alberta were in the C$208 to C$212 per tonne
area as of February 5, which was C$1-$3 lower compared to the previous week. Feed wheat prices were in the C$220 to C$232 range, which were roughly the same as the previous week.
