Feed Grains: USDA exported 12 per cent more feed grains in 2016-17

Winnipeg, October 10 (CNS) – According to figures released by the USDA last Thursday and analyzed by the U.S. Grains Council, the United States exported 114.1 million tonnes of feed grains from September, 2016 to August, 2017, which is a 12 per cent increase from the previous year.

United States corn exports rose by 21 per cent increase to 58.1 tonnes from the previous year to make for the biggest increase since 2007/2008. This increase was due to purchases by long-term trading partners including Mexico, Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, as well as increased exports to markets like Saudi Arabia, Colombia and Peru.

In the Ukraine more farmers are storing corn rather than selling it which has caused prices to stay firm in the run up to November and December. Prices for Ukrainian corn have slumped since the summer, hitting a three-year low at the end of September, amid a global supply glut brought on by bumper crops in Brazil and more export-centric policies in Argentina.

Feed wheat in Lethbridge, AB last week closed at $215 to $225 per tonne, up slightly from the previous week at $212 to $225 per tonne, according to Alberta Agriculture and Forestry. Feed wheat in Red Deer closed at $210 to $213 per tonne, which was slight change from the previous week of $203 to $215 per tonne. In Edmonton feed wheat prices fell slightly from $207 to $210 per tonne to $200 to $210 per tonne.

Feed barley in Lethbridge closed at $207 to $212 per tonne, which is up from the previous week’s close of $200 to $210 per tonne.
