Global Markets: Alberta implements COVID-19 measures

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Alberta Premier Jason Kenney announced on Wednesday the province will immediately implement new measures to combat COVID-19 including restrictions on gatherings and a proof-of-vaccination program to enter certain businesses and public buildings. The province has also declared a state of emergency as new COVID-19 cases continue to rise and hospitals run out of beds. Kenney also apologized at a press conference for his government eliminating most restrictions last spring.

– Canada added 39,400 more jobs in August, according to a report from ADP released on Thursday. The addition of new jobs was mostly seen in the trade, transportation and utilities sector. However, ADP revised July data to show that 21,600 jobs were lost instead of a gain of 221,300 as was previously reported.

– Housing starts slowed in August compared to the previous month, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reported on Thursday. The seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing starts was 260,239 units in August, slightly lower than the 270,744 reported in July. The pace in urban starts dropped 4.7 per cent to 235,782.
