– Wildfires in Alberta could continue well into the summer months, according to the province’s Wildfire Information Unit. As of Wednesday afternoon, 91 forest fires were burning in Alberta with 27 considered out of control, displacing nearly 12,000 people with a small amount allowed to return. Nearly 1,000 firefighters from elsewhere in Canada and the U.S. have been brought in to fight the flames, which have already destroyed 745,300 hectares of forest, the third-largest area since 2005. Hot, dry and windy conditions are expected to continue through the Victoria Day weekend.

– Russia fired 30 cruise missiles towards different parts of Ukraine Thursday morning with newly-implemented air defences shooting down 29 of them. The one that got through struck an industrial building in Odessa, killing one and injuring two others. Ukraine also shot down four Russian drones. Meanwhile, Ukrainian military spokesperson Serhiy Cherevatyi said it has advanced as much as 500 metres against Russian forces in some areas around the city of Bakhmut. However, he added that Russia appears to be sending in new units and is not short of ammunition.
– As Friday’s pilot strike deadline gets closer, WestJet said on Thursday it has already started to cancel flights ahead of an anticipated work stoppage. The airline also said it will ground the majority of its 737 and 787 fleet in a “measured, safe approach.” Approximately 1,800 pilots flying for WestJet and discount carrier Swoop could walk off the job as of 2 a.m. CDT on Friday.
