Global Markets: Assad overthrown, flees to Russia

The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Syrian president Bashar al-Assad fled the country and was granted political asylum in Russia after Syrian rebels overthrew Assad’s government over the weekend. The rebels, led by former al-Qaeda affiliate Hayat al-Tahrir al-Sham, reached Damascus, freed prisoners and toppled Assad, who was the leader of the country since 2000 when he succeeded his father Hafez who was sworn in in 1971. Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi Jalali stayed in his post and said the government plans to meet with rebel leader Ahmad al-Sharaa to assist in a smooth transition.

– Conservative MP Jamil Jivani met with United States vice-president-elect and longtime friend J.D. Vance, along with British Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch on Saturday in Arlington, Va. In a statement, Jivani said he expressed to Vance how Canada is “America’s best friend and ally”, adding that it is a “reliable trade and security partner”. U.S. president-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports if both countries did not strengthen their respective borders with the U.S.

– The Liberals will face a third non-confidence vote in the House of Commons later today, but will likely survive with support from the New Democrats. MPs will vote on a motion quoting NDP leader Jagmeet Singh’s criticism of the Liberals, but Singh has indicated he will not support the Conservative motion. The House will also vote on a number of additional motions, including an expansion of the planned GST break and C$250 rebate, as well as C$21.6 billion to fund initiatives such as dental care and the national school food program.
