Global Markets: Biden to visit Canada tomorrow

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– United States President Joe Biden will make his first official in-person visit to Canada on Thursday before becoming the eighth U.S. President to address Parliament on Friday. Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are expected to discuss issues including migration, defence spending, economic development and the current situation in Haiti.

– A 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck both Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday, killing 11 people. The U.S. Geological Survey said the epicentre of the quake was located on the border separating the two countries while also being near the neighbouring country of Tajikistan. The event caused roofs to collapse and triggered landslides in mountainous areas.

– Spain’s parliament voted overwhelmingly against a non-confidence motion on Tuesday brought on by the far-right Vox party against the government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The government received support from 201 out of 254 total votes, mostly from Sanchez’s Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party. The right-wing Popular Party abstained from the vote. Spain will conduct its general election on Dec. 10.
