WINNIPEG, June 19 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

  • United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, marking the first American secretary of state to meet with the Chinese leader in five years. While no major agreements were announced, the fact that the two sides were talking was seen as a positive development in their strained relationship.

  • Ukraine claimed Monday to have retaken eight settlements from Russia over the past two weeks as part of their counteroffensive. The incremental gains for Ukraine were seen as significant according to military analysts, although the main counteroffensive push is thought to be still to come.

  • Many U.S. markets are closed Monday in celebration of Juneteenth, which marks the day in 1865 that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas found out they were freed – two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued during the Civil War. Long recognized by Black Americans, Juneteenth only became an official federal holiday in 2021.
