– Five wildfires are still in progress in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas with 130,000 people asked to evacuate and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed by the blazes. – The state funeral for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter will take place at the Washington National Cathedral on Thursday before a second service and burial in his hometown of Plains, Ga. Outgoing President Joe Biden, the first senator to have endorsed Carter’s presidential campaign in 1976, will give one of the eulogies, while all living former presidents are expected to attend. The son of Carter’s vice-president Walter Mondale, as well as the grandson of former president Gerald Ford will also speak at the funeral. Carter, a former governor of Georgia, was U.S. president from 1977 to 1981, before entering a distinguished life of post-presidential public service. He died last month at the age of 100.
