WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.
– Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported this morning that Canada’s economy added 35,000 jobs in March while the unemployment rate held at five per cent. March was the fourth straight month the unemployment rate went unchanged. Employment grew in transportation and warehousing, business, finance and real estate, while jobs were lost in construction and natural resources. Average hourly wages rose 5.3 per cent on an annual basis.
– More than one million people are without power this morning after an ice storm hit Montreal and parts of southwestern Quebec on Wednesday. Hydro-Quebec said that many customers will be without electricity into the Easter weekend, while 1,100 employees will be on the ground attempting to remedy more than 2,200 power outages. Approximately 40 millimetres of rain and 15 mm of freezing rain fell onto the Montreal area during the storm.

– Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and United States President Joe Biden called on Russia this morning to release Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich from jail after the two leaders took part in a phone call. Gershkovich was arrested by Russia’s Federal Security Service last month on suspicion of “spying in the interests of the American government”, which carries a prison term of up to 20 years. The Wall Street Journal and the White House have both denied the allegations.
