Global Markets: Canada gains 150,000 jobs in January

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported on Friday that the country’s economy added 150,000 jobs in January, well beyond pre-report expectations. It was the fifth consecutive month of job gains with 326,000 jobs added since September. Employment increased in five provinces, including Ontario, Quebec and Alberta with wholesale and retail trade contributing to most of the gains.

– TC Energy Corp. has estimated the cost of cleanup and remediation from last December’s oil spill from its pipeline in Kansas to be US$480 million, according to a news release put out on Friday. The size of the spill was initially thought to be 14,000 barrels, but the company later revised the total to 12,937. TC Energy also released the results of an investigation into the causes of the leak, which revealed a combination of factors including bending stress on the pipe and a welding flaw.
