Global Markets: Canada Post, CUPW try to avoid strike

– As workers at Canada Post get set to hit the picket line at midnight on Friday, the Crown corporation issued a new set of proposals on Wednesday to end the strike. The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said late Wednesday it was still reviewing them, but they identified areas where the proposals fell short. Canada Post offered a 13 per cent wage increase over four years while CUPW was seeking a 19 per cent increase. Canada Post also rejected CUPW’s offer of two weeks to review the proposals. The previous strike in November and December lasted 32 days.

– The United States House of Representatives passed a massive spending bill early this morning, which would add US$3.8 trillion to the country’s US$36.2 trillion in debt over the next decade. The legislation included tax breaks, eliminated green energy programs from the Biden administration, would remove millions of people from Medicaid and added new spending for the military and border enforcement. The motion passed 215-214 with two Republicans voting no, another voting “present” and a fourth Republican falling asleep. The bill will move on to the Senate.

– Buenos Aires will not see any heavy rains until June 2 at the earliest, according to forecasts from Argentina’s Climate and Water Institute. Meanwhile, heavy rains are expected for the northeastern corner of the country over the next few days. Agricultural areas around the Argentine capital were devastated by floods caused by heavy rains last week, threatening corn and soybean crops.
