– The Canadian economy outperformed expectations in December, adding 91,000 jobs during the month and creating a 0.1-point decline in the unemployment rate at 6.7 per cent, Statistics Canada reported Friday. Most of the jobs added were full-time, especially in educational services, health care and social assistance, finance and transportation. The average hourly wage rose by C$1.32 compared to last year at C$35.77 per hour, but it declined on a month-by-month basis.

– The Liberal Party will choose their next leader, and therefore, the next prime minister, on March 9, according to a news release sent Thursday night. Candidates will have to declare their intention to run and pay a C$350,000 entry fee by Jan. 23. People can register to vote in the leadership race until Jan. 27. So far, two candidates have come forward: Ottawa MP Chandra Arya and former Montreal MP Frank Baylis.
– United States president-elect Donald Trump will be sentenced for his hush money conviction in a New York courthouse on Friday after the Supreme Court refused to intervene on his behalf. Judge Juan M. Merchan indicated he would give Trump an unconditional discharge to avoid constitutional issues with regards to a felon assuming the presidency.
– A Canadian water bomber fighting the Palisades fire in Los Angeles, named Quebec 1, had to be grounded on Thursday after colliding with a drone flying in restricted airspace. The L.A. Fire Department said the plane sustained wing damage and will be out of service for the time being. There were no injuries, but the collision caused the temporary grounding of all aircraft responding to the fire.
