Global Markets: Canada’s economy to recover: Deloitte

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– A new forecast released from Deloitte Canada on Thursday predicts the Canadian economy will “get back on its feet” during the first half of 2024. Continued population growth and a better-than-expected economic outlook in the United States will offset pressure from household debt, rising interest payments and persistent inflation. Deloitte also expects the Bank of Canada to cut its key interest rate by the second half of next year. The report estimated that Canada’s GDP will increase one per cent this year and 0.9 per cent next year.

– More than two million Hyundai and Kia cars in the U.S., as well as more than 600,000 in Canada were issued a recall on Wednesday and owners are being told to park their vehicles away from buildings due to a fire risk. The recall encompasses 2010 to 2015 models of the Accent, Elantra, Tucson, Santa Fe and others, plus Kia’s Optima, Forte, Soul, Sportage, Rio and other models from 2010 to 2017. At issue is the potential for leaking brake fluid which could cause an electrical short circuit.

– Seven Republican candidates took part in a televised presidential debate inside the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. on Wednesday, less the frontrunner, former U.S. President Donald Trump. The candidates rallied against the former president, who was giving a speech to autoworkers in Michigan at the time. Candidates yelling and speaking over each other plagued the debate but there were notable moments. Former New Jersey governor Chris Christie pointedly called Trump “Donald Duck”. Also, former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy engaged in a long back-and-forth, and Florida governor Ron DeSantis defended his anti-abortion stance.
