Global Markets: Canadian farmland values continue to rise

  • Farm Credit Canada reported on Tuesday the value of Canadian cultivated farmland increased by a healthy 9.3 per cent in 2024 but slipped from 11.5 per cent in 2023. Saskatchewan led the country with values up 13.1 per cent, followed by British Columbia at 11.3 per cent. On the other end, Prince Edward Island saw the least growth at 1.4 per cent with Ontario second last at 3.1 per cent.

  • A storm cell is forecast to bring rain, sleet and snow to hit parts of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas on Wednesday. The amount of snow could reach 12 inches, bringing much need moisture to those parts of the United States Midwest that are in a moderate drought. Over the weekend, a series of tornadoes struck the region and areas of the U.S. South, killing more than 40 people.

 

  • The CME Group announced on Tuesday plans to start a futures market for European rapeseed oil with plans to begin trading on April 28, pending regulatory approval. Details include using the Argus Media index for Dutch prices, trading through the Chicago Board of Trade and contracts being in lots of 20 tonnes. Also, CME has been planning a North American spring wheat futures market, with trading expected to begin on April 14.

 

  • The U.S. Federal Reserve is set to make its latest interest rate announcement on Wednesday afternoon. Analysts’ expectations point to the Fed standing pat on its key rates for now. However, the Trump administration’s tariff policies could result in higher inflation in the U.S. which could led the Fed to hiking its rates in the months to come.

 

  • Canada’s population grew by 0.2 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2024, Statistics Canada reported on Wednesday. StatCan estimated the country’s population was just short of 41.53 million people as of Jan. 1, 2025, gaining about 63,400 people in Q4.
