Global Markets: Canadian retail sales up in January

WINNIPEG – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– Statistics Canada (StatCan) reported on Friday morning that retail sales rose 1.4 per cent during the month of January to C$66.4 billion. The increase in sales was attributed to a three per cent rise in sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers, as well as a 2.9 per cent increase at gas stations. The result was double the 0.7 per cent gain StatCan previously estimated. However, Canada’s central data agency has predicted a 0.6 per cent decline for February.

– United States President Joe Biden arrived in Ottawa on Thursday for his first official visit to Canada as head of state. Biden was also accompanied by Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Homeland Security Adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall. More than one million people took part in protests and created disruptions across the country after French President Emmanuel Macron authorized unpopular pension reforms, including raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.
