Global Markets: Canadian trade deficit widens

  • Canada’s merchandise trade deficit with the rest of the world widened to C$5.9 billion in June from C$5.5 billion the previous month, as imports increased by 1.4 per cent and exports were up 0.9 per cent, reported Statistics Canada.

 

  • Brazil’s Supreme Court has ordered the house arrest of former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently on trial on allegations of attempting a coup to remain in office despite being defeated in the 2022 election. The house arrest was ordered due to accusations Bolsonaro has violated precautionary measures imposed during the trial against spreading online content.

  • Corn crops in the United States were rated 73 per cent good to excellent in the latest weekly report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which was unchanged from the previous week.

 

  • Soybean crops in the country dipped one point on the week, to come in at 69 per cent good to excellent.

 

  • Spring wheat was 48 per cent good to excellent, with five per cent harvested. U.S. winter wheat was 86 per cent harvested, which was one point off the five-year average.
