Global Markets: Canadian unemployment rate dips to 5.0%

WINNIPEG, Feb. 16 (MarketsFarm) – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

 

  • The number of Canadians receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits fell by 2.0 per cent in December, to 398,000, continuing a downward trend in place since July 2022. The country’s unemployment rate dipped to 5.0 per cent, from 5.1 per cent the previous month.

 

  • As the Russian invasion of Ukraine nears its one-year anniversary dozens of Russian missiles were launched at Ukrainian targets on Thursday. An estimated 16 of the 36 missiles fired were reportedly shot down, with hit targets including Ukraine’s largest oil refinery, Kremenchuk.

 

  • The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Turkey and Syria is nearing 42,000, according to reports, with the monetary cost likely to hit US$25 billion as relief efforts continue.
