Global Markets: First Ukrainian grain in months leaves port

WINNIPEG, Aug. 2 – The following is a glance at the news moving markets in Canada and globally.

– The first vessel moving grain out of a Ukrainian port left Odessa over the weekend with a 23,000-tonne shipment of corn destined for Lebanon. More than 20 million tonnes of grain have been left stranded in Ukrainian ports for months due to the Russian invasion of the country. Other vessels are expected to move through the safe-passage corridors over the upcoming weeks.

– Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed by a United States drone strike on July 30 in Afghanistan, confirmed U.S. President Joe Biden. The operation marks the biggest blow to the terrorist organization since its founder Osama Bin Laden was killed in 2011.

– Nancy Pelosi, Speaker with the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to arrive in Taipei, Taiwan on Tuesday despite warnings from China against the visit to the disputed territory. Chinese warplanes were reportedly flying close to the median line dividing the Taiwan Strait.
