- Heavy rains in northern India caused a Himalayan glacial lake to overflow, killing at least 18 people with about 100 more still missing. Sikkam state received 101 millimetres of rain during the first five days of October, causing Lhonak Lake to flood. Bridges were washed away, hampering rescue efforts.
- A Russian rocket attack on a village café in eastern Ukraine left at least 49 civilians dead, according to reports. The attack in the Kharkiv region was the deadliest in recent months and came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was attending a summit with European leaders in Spain.
- Canada’s international merchandise trade balance moved from a deficit of C$437 million in July to a surplus of C$718 million in August, as exports were up by 5.7 per cent and imports increased by 3.8 per cent, according to a report from Statistics Canada. The surplus marked the first since April.
