– Ontario Premier Doug Ford said Monday morning that his government would rescind legislation to make an education workers’ strike illegal if their union would stop their mass walkout. Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce introduced Bill 28, or the “Keeping Students In Class Act” on Oct. 31 and was passed in the province’s parliament three days later. The Act made it illegal for the Canadian Union of Public Employees’ (CUPE) education workers to go on strike and imposed a four-year contract on them. Labour leaders are expected to announce an escalation to protests against the legislation later today.

– The 2022 United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference (COP27) began on Sunday in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, with leaders and experts repeating warnings about the severe and irreversible effects of climate change. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said at the conference that the world was on “a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.” A delegation from Dalhousie University’s Ocean Frontier Institute will make a presentation about the effect of the oceans on climate forecasts.
– The Competition Tribunal will begin its public hearing on Rogers Communications Inc.’s proposed C$26-billion takeover of Shaw Communications Inc. later today. The hearing will aim to resolve a stalemate between the Commissioner of Competition and both Rogers and Shaw. However, the competition watchdog reiterated its opposition to the deal last week, saying the merger would lead to worse services and higher prices.
